Hmm main three reasons; Insecurity, Social Law, and Belief that there is something more.

why do people feel the need to have others tell them how to act, what to say and what to feel?
why are people so insecure about reality?

I won't get my Bible and soapbox out, just answer the questions. Reality is harsh. Simple as that. To me, however, lightening up reality is not a business of my religion. I don't try to dull reality, I try to put up with it.
The first question is another simple answer. Pride. It makes them feel special to have someone subjugated to them. That's still not religion to me, though.

For the first... In ancient times, to have an explanation for all the odd things that occured, like rain and lightning. Then when things were discovered to have causes behind them, people clung to it since it's been in existence for so long. Used it to find reassurance for themselves, or as a reason to fight wars.
Now and throughout time, probably some part of it lies in a fear of death. The unwillingness to believe that there's nothing beyond the grave, that once you die your mind will just... cease to exist. It's a frightening concept, certainly for me.
Should be noted that I'm not an atheist; I'm just trying to look at things logically.
As for the second questions... Well, humans -are- social creatures, and want to fit in with some group, any at all if they're desperate enough. If they find a gathering they can join, many times they'll do what they're told, even if they might know they're in the wrong.
Lastly, it's as Vite said. It's a roller coaster of high points and depressingly low ones, and when you hit those low points you want to do anything in order to make yourself feel better, even run from reality.

As was mentioned earlier, Religeon was probably created to explane and ease problems of the time, such as famine and flood. As time past these problems began to abate as technology advanced. However, new problems began to arise. Issues of theft and adultry, which were not as common among ancient people, grew more prevalent and a new religeon was needed to help ease and explane this. My idea is that problems give birth to religeon, and since people will always have problems, they will always have religeon. To answer the question of why people need religeon, its the same reason people may carry a worry stone, only on a much larger scale.

Saying that theft and adultery didn't exist earlier was an odd choice. People's nature hasn't change, just our technology. Look in the history books. People have and always will be amoral by nature. The religions I know of have always dealt with it the same way now as later. A religion such as the Ancient Egyptian system of gods dealt with explanations of natural events and giving those morals, like deeming something clean or godly. Religion today has dropped certain explanations to science discovering the truth, but "guidance" in a form or another is still around. Religion is something I see as unnecessary, unless you see it as truth. Anything it deals with has it's own excuses now. Science gives some explanations and the law restricts most else. A person is also capable of controlling themselves. Another reason for having a religion: How about I assume that my religion is true? Wouldn't that be enough reason to believe it? That's why I have it, after all. I could leave it and not lose anything that's been given as a reason here here, but I see truth in it.
