Another movie, a historic fictional.
This movie is about WWII Japan. Most notably two children in post-war Japan. There is a near-middle schoolboy, and a young, 4 or 5, girl. The very opening first line is “June 21, 1945, the day I died.” You see, the story is told by the spirit of the boy. The story is how they survive, and then don’t, after their mother dies, with their father being a naval officer at war. Kind of a bleak story.
It’s also extremely good. It’s very possibly true, minus the minor roles the spirits play. It is a tale of something terrible, and it should not be happy. It gets the point it wants to get across really well. War sucks. A 5.
The art is a realistic style, much like Akira. The art’s better, and it gives a proper showing of feelings. It just doesn’t look good compared to some others. A 3.5.
The music is one orchestrated piece in the end, but the silence gives it a feeling that suits it. The voices and sound effects are good. I really can’t complain. 4.
Overall, this movie is freaking SAD! It’s got almost no humor, little action. It’s good. It has something about it that makes it a great movie. Even above all others I’ve reviewed. Each a classic, beat by this. All the rage in Akira, the energy in Totoro, the tenseness in Ghost, all of of it transferred to sadness. It’s depressing and gloomy, you know the end from the start, but the story it tells is awesome. The absolute highest of 5.
A word after my afterword- Reveiws will come out much slower now, as I've reviewed all animes I've previously seen. I now will try to do one every two days or so.
